It’s a sight and a feeling Liverpool fans had become plenty familiar with over the course of Steven Gerrard’s decorated career. The talismanic midfielder had so often driven his side back from the brink, finding a crucial moment of magic just when the club needed it most. His goalscoring power – with 186 strikes for the Reds across 710 appearances – was a chief weapon in the Gerrard armoury, helping to enshrine his iconic status. And it was pivotal on March 23, 2019 as, four years on from his final competitive appearance at Anfield, he returned again and wrote another chapter of his story in front of more than 50,000 supporters. Liverpool FC Legends were hosting Milan Glorie in the LFC Foundation charity fixture, with Jamie Carragher, Dirk Kuyt, Sami Hyypia, Daniel Agger and Robbie Fowler among those to also pull on club colours once more. The Italian giants boasted their own historic figures – Kaka, Andrea Pirlo, Paolo Maldini, Cafu, to name a few – and would play a key role in a thrilling contest. Fowler fires the Reds into the lead after 25 minutes and fellow forward Djibril Cisse doubles that advantage after the half-time interval, but the classy Milan fight back to level the game through Pirlo and Giuseppe Pancaro. Yet as the last minute looms, the final word goes to Gerrard, just as it has so often before. Summoning a piece of inspiration in front of the Kop, a one-two carries the midfielder to the edge of the box, where he turns this way and that, creating just the necessary space to thread a trademark finish into the goal via the inside of the post to win the tie. Arms aloft, he soaks up the Anfield adulation. There’s that feeling again, one that never gets old. “It’s always a special time to come to Anfield, especially when it’s full, and just put the kit on,” Gerrard soon reflects. “To play against Milan with all my ex-teammates, and to get the winner, is obviously a special feeling.”
